Biography
The singer-songwriter and pianist Afra Kane is the winner of the prestigious Montreux Jazz Talent Award and has undoubtedly established herself as one of the most exciting neo-soul and jazz talents of our time.
The music of the young artist is difficult to classify, as she seamlessly blends various genres with a cinematic sound. Kane describes her style as a mix of jazz and progressive R&B. Through her music, she aims to create an alternative reality—one in which self-discovery and healing are embraced through fearless emotional expression, acknowledging contrasts such as faith & doubt, fear & empowerment, discovery & surrender.
With her latest album, Could We Be Whole (Warner Music, 2024), Kane solidifies her reputation as a captivating and versatile singer. Her intimate, almost mystical creative approach is reflected in virtuosic arrangements and a voice that is both powerful and seductive—a sound that is felt rather than simply defined.
Kane has performed on renowned stages across Europe, Asia, and North and South America, including New York’s Rockwood Music Hall, Hong Kong’s Café Carlyle——a prestigious branch of the legendary club in New York, where legends like Eartha Kitt and Woody Allen have performed—and Berlin’s iconic jazz club A-Trane, which has hosted artists such as Herbie Hancock. She has also been a guest act on Jack Savoretti’s Italy tour and appeared at major festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, Leverkusener Jazztage, and Festival de Jazz de St. Moritz. In 2025, she will also perform at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany.
Before releasing her latest album, Could We Be Whole (2024, Warner Music), Kane had already gained recognition with her critically acclaimed debut album Hypersensitive (2022), as well as the EP Scorpio (2019) and several singles, including Mouth Shut, which was named “Record of the Week” by BBC Music Introducing.
Afra Kane, who currently resides in both England and Switzerland, received her first piano lessons at an early age. Her exceptional talent soon led her to classical training at prestigious institutions such as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (Wales) and the Haute École de Musique de Genève (Switzerland). Her diverse musical interests quickly led her to songwriting, merging her classical foundation with jazz, soul, R&B, and future funk, thus developing her signature cinematic sound.
Winning the Montreux Jazz Talent Award—granted by a distinguished jury including Stanley Clarke, Chilly Gonzales, Carl Craig, and Chucho Valdés—marked the beginning of a promising international career for Afra Kane.
