Philipp Schupelius was selected by Classic FM as one of their 30 Most Exciting Young Musicians in the World in March 2024. The award-winning young cellist has already thrilled audiences on numerous European stages, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He is passionate themed concerts and combining different art forms into one integrated concert experience. He is currently studying at the Kronberg Academy in Frankfurt under Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt. His studies are made possible through a grant by the Sodalitas Patronat.
In August 2023 Philipp won the prestigious German Music Competition in Bonn. This prize includes a CD recording on the Leipzig label GENUIN, to be released in 2024. His debut CD, entitled PAU! A Tribute to Casals, released in September 2023, is a musical exploration of the world of ideas of Pablo Casals – cellist of the century and peace activist.
He received the Discovery Award from the International Music Awards (ICMA) at the age of 17. In October 2022 he won both a Boris Pergamenschikov Grant and the Fanny Mendelssohn Prize. Other honours include the First Great Award from the Manhattan Music Competition in 2021 and the Silver Medal from the Eurovision Young Musicians Contest in 2022. He is a multiple first-prize winner of Jugend musiziert. Philipp will be feature das a debut artist at the Nikolaisaal in Potsdam in the upcoming season.
Philipp has been extremely fortunate to have studied under exceptional musicians, such as Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, under whose tutelage he has been for six years. Prior to that he studied under Ulrich Voss. Justin Pearson, Daniel Hope and Anssi Karttunen were also important mentors. His participation in the Menuhin String Academy in Gstaad with Ivan Monighetti in 2018 was key, as were his masterclasses with the late remarkable cellists Lynn Harrell and Wolfgang Boettcher. He also studied with Jens Peter Maintz, Daniel Geiss and Frans Helmerson.
Philipp Schupelius made his stage debut in 2017 playing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the Bergische Symphoniker; the concert was broadcast by WDR. In autumn 2023 he played the commemorative concert to mark the 50th anniversary of Pablo Casal’s death at the Beethovenhaus in Bonn. He has performed with Daniel Hope (violin) and Philip Dukes (viola) at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, among others. In 2024, Philipp Schupelius will premiere Fazil Say’s new work For the Children composed especially for him and the percussionist Leon Lorenz at this festival.
The Holzer v. Borcke Music Foundation has supported Philipp since 2020. He was also a scholarship holder of the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein, and the Jürgen Ponto Foundation. In 2018 he was awarded a scholarship from the Kronberg Academy. Since 2021 he has been performing with the pianist Ron Huang for Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now in Berlin.
